After the ten-year civil war in Sierra Leone, the country's education and healthcare systems were severely impacted. Many schools were destroyed or closed due to the conflict, resulting in insufficient medical equipment and a collapse of basic healthcare systems.
In response to this dire situation, the Centro Internazionale Helder Camara ODV (CHC)
launched a series of resettlement and training centers in the KWAM region, aiming to help local citizens rebuild their lives.
In 2018, Mrs Yuan Mengni, a volunteer with CHC, traveled to Sierra Leone to conduct an
assessment and discovered the lack of employment opportunities as the root cause of poverty for many families, despite many people's efforts to find a way out.
This realization deeply moved her to find a solution to support the local families and community. After gaining a deeper understanding of the local challenges, Mrs Yuan conceived a plan to create sustainable products by collaborating with designers and sales channels from Milan. These products would not only be commercially viable but would also provide stable job opportunities for the local community, based on traditional manufacturing techniques.
